60 Second Interview - Alfred Buttigieg

Alfred Buttigieg is the playwright of the entertaining and thought-provoking play Ir-Rewwixta tal-Qassisin which was performed with great success in 1986 and which is being revived at the Manoel Theatre on 25, 26 and 27 February (see details on the left). He is the author of various other works including Gezzu, an adult fable, the controversial book Dik il-Qtajra, children’s plays and one-act plays. He is also one of the founding members of the 1980s theatrical group Ateatru. His collection of four one-act plays La Logique u drammi ohra b’att wiehed is going to be pubished shortly. He is also a member of the Manoel Theatre Management Committee and the chairman of the Manoel Theatre drama committee. Mr Buttigieg is a teacher by profession and at present is the headmaster of San Anton Middle School.

My wife Maria Theresa alias Lavinia and my three archangels Raphael, Gabriel and Michaela.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

With the amount of cigarettes I smoke I’ll

be surprised if I’ll still be around in 10 years’ time.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being at peace with myself.

What is your favourite

occupation?

Being a headmaster. I wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.

What is your greatest fear?

Seeing my children or my wife suffer and being unable to help them.

What is it that you most value in your friends?

Their humour and frankness.

How would you like to die?

In my sleep.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Cigarettes and a Versace pair of jeans.

What is your greatest regret?

Having stopped writing and publishing for a long time and being unable to overcome my fear of flying.

What is your most treasured possession?

Two large phallic wall ceramics by Neville

Ferry.

Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

Playing a musical instrument.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Loneliness.

Where would you like to live?

Malta is good enough for me.

What is your most marked characteristic?

Unfortunately my sarcasm.

Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

I admire politicians for their cheek and guile.

What is it that you most dislike?

Anyone who boasts.

What is your motto?

Tomorrow is another day.
