Outdated Rent laws injustice

From Mr J. Caruana

As usual, Daphne has hit the nail squarely on the head with her account of the misfortunes of the Grech family (TMIS, 23 January). Like possibly thousands of others in the same situation, our family is also still suffering from injustice as a result of the post-war rent laws combined with the 1970’s requisitioning era.

The then-existing tenant of our grandmother’s large house was given a modern terraced house by the Housing Authority. At that point, instead of returning our grandmother’s property to its rightful owners, the Housing Authority blatantly chose to give the keys to someone else. Those who wanted this large house (and presumably had the right connections) thus got it without the owner’s consent.

Obviously, in those dictatorial times, one simply had to accept the miserly sum offered through the Housing Authority or else face the consequences.

Now that we are fully integrated with the EU, we would like to enquire as to whether we are ever going to receive some form of decent compensation from the government/Social Services for providing accommodation to someone whom we were forced to accept as our tenants.

For how long will these most unwelcome tenants continue to benefit from our forced generosity, while we fork out our own hard-earned money to buy other property to meet our own requirements ?

This government always projects itself as being in favour of justice. When does it actually intend to start delivering this justice ?

J. Caruana
