Semi Europeans

Malta Independent Sunday, 20 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Mr A. Brincat

Malta is situated at a very strategic point in Europe and has now joined the EU. This should make us more European than the Europeans themselves. But unfortunately, we are only semi Europeans, if you ask me.

Many rules and regulations are being introduced to conform with the EU and its standards but this seems to happen only when the public can be taxed and money raised. Take the ECO contribution – some call it tax – the wardens enforce the law and fine people rather than teaching them, and so on.

But I say, what about the streets? Does one think these will ever be of the same standard as those in the majority of countries of the EU? And if in the affirmative, do we have to wait till the umpteenth century or millennium? Fines and taxes were introduced immediately and without hesitation so why do we have to wait so long to have a few kilometres of roads rebuilt or resurfaced? We had been preparing ourselves to join the EU for many years, why therefore were the roads not upgraded? Is it fair that we now have a VRT test like the rest of the other EU countries when most of our roads are like dirt roads – and I mean main and very busy roads, and not lanes in the countryside.

It is really disgusting and insulting to the public in general to be treated in this inhumane way. One always hopes for the best, but when is the best going to be? When can one see the light at the end of the tunnel? Why do things take so long, cost so much and are never up to standard here?
