The Unbuilt roads of Malta

Malta Independent Sunday, 20 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Ms D. Borg Mizzi

Reference is made to Triq l-Gassies – a danger zone and to Unmade road at Tan-Nadur Zone, Marsascala (TMIS, 6 March).

To begin with, I sympathise with the correspondents and also the residents of these particular streets and can assure them and the general public that the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) is working hard to try and reconstruct and complete as many roads in the shortest time possible.

One must also bear in mind that the road construction industry in Malta has had to keep up with the fast rate of property development.

At the start of 2004 the number of residential roads which were in need of formation and construction topped 600. That number has been reduced by a quarter in the past 14 months with the construction of around 150 roads by the ADT or by local councils in collaboration with the ADT.

That means that at present there are still around 450 roads awaiting construction. During the course of this year, the ADT and the Ministry for Urban Development and Roads will be drafting a programme of work for the construction of all these roads. This will allow residents to know exactly when their road will be up for construction and allow them to follow the process closely.
