Malta Independent Thursday, 24 March 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The March-April edition (Issue 60) of ‘Boats and Yachting’ magazine has announced the organisation of a new sport event: The Malta-Sicily Offshore Speed Challenge, which is expected to be well received by the many local powerboat enthusiasts who will now have a daring event to enjoy and to test their talent in competitive racing.

“The Windsurf Race held from 1984 till 1994 was a fantastic experience and it gave all concerned great satisfaction both from an organisation and competitive level besides positive exposure overseas to Malta and Sicily in general. Now we’re back and into something new which presents excitement, spectacle and fun. As was done with the Windsurf Race we intend to start modestly but we are confident this Event will grow and develop into a prime attraction even to catch the fancy of international contestants. Naturally, local interest will get stronger and better equipped year by year”, explained Wilfred Sultana, promoter of the new event.

Once again, Pozzallo will be the Sicilian connection in the organisation of the Offshore Speed Challenge. “We welcome this pleasant initiative and look forward to exploit the opportunities of collaboration between the two communities such an Event presents”, remarked Dott. Roberto Ammatuna, Mayor of the Comune di Pozzallo.

While information on participation will be published in the coming weeks, it is confirmed that the first edition of the Malta-Sicily Offshore Speed Challenge will be held on Saturday 9 July. An interesting programme of support activities, comprising gastronomic, cultural, and entertaining attractions will enhance the sport event.
