The Culture of death

Malta Independent Tuesday, 12 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Mr David Micallef wrote a letter entitled A definition of hell (TMID, 7 April) in which he basically presented a pro-death and pro-euthanasia case.

He seems to think that I am some old conservative, locked up behind four walls, never able to speak to anyone. I would therefore like to inform Mr Micallef that, like himself, I too am a youth and, like Mr Micallef, I therefore have more than my fair share of contact with young people.

What Mr Micallef said proves that we are indeed moving towards a culture of death. What has happened to the sanctity of life? The society promoted by Mr Micallef is the society where there is only room for the fittest; a society that wants to kill the weak, make sure that no more “weak” people are born and clone those who are defined as “perfect”.

It is sad to see the culture of death flourishing in our continent and, it seems, even in our country. Mr Micallef thinks that it is normal for a 26 year old to discuss such matters of life and death. What he does not realise is that had it not been for the Terri Schiavo case, he would have never written this pro-euthanasia letter – it took an actual case to make him think about it.

Finally, I would invite Mr Micallef to take a closer look at the Terri Schiavo case.

Terri Schiavo had not received any proper treatment since 1991 because her husband had stopped it. Doctors had long claimed that treatment could improve her situation but Michael Schiavo and his team insisted on removing the feeding tube.

In her last hours Terri Schiavo was, according to her priest, distressed and in pain. Indeed a death with dignity in the culture of death!

Angelo Micallef
