Martial Arts: The Realistic self defence

Malta Independent Thursday, 28 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

This is a very important phrase and many use it with so much irresponsibility. I am writing this with no offence to anyone, and with great respect to all martial arts and martial sports individuals.

Realistic Self Defence has become a phrase that every one is using to promote his school or dojo or club.

First of all I am not claiming myself to be an expert but for sure I am taught by experts and by people who dedicated their lives in this field of Realistic Self Defence.

I am referring to The WingTsun Leung Ting System and The European WingTsun Organisation. The Leung Ting WingTsun system is regarded by experts as one of the most effective self defence systems on the planet. That is why Special Forces around the world, like FBI, CIA SEK, MEK, GSG9, NOKS rely on WingTsun on a daily basis.

Why do we all have to play the Jack of all trades? How come we can teach and change from competitions, sports or let’s call it martial sports to teaching realistic self defence?

Between Martial arts and Martial sports there is a big difference. The difference of competing for points, with rules, on soft carpets, with full gear protection and in fighting rings is totally different than defending or protecting ourselves in the street or where ever. I cannot say much regarding competitions as it is not my line of teaching, neither sports as I’m instructed and taught to teach Self Defence.

I have been teaching for the last six years and I have met all kinds of students – experienced and not. And this is the most worrying thing! Students having other martial backgrounds come to my school and it is really shocking, when I hear them say, that they have been doing a style and they were taught self defence! Well that they have been taught self defence is not a bad idea but they were taught the wrong things. As I already explained there’s a difference between sports and realistic defence.

Sometimes even we will have students from other styles to train for some time with us so that they can achieve their black belt in their style.

Out in the streets we do not just want a style of fighting system but much more. We need to teach a student to acquire self confidence, control the excitement.

In short the student needs to have control of all his fears. A student must learn the distances between him/her and that of the aggressor, the shorter way to achieve his protection, the stability as he/she might be having a much stronger aggressor or heavier in weight not like competitions where a competitor is going to compete with some one of his/her body weight. How come we are taught to hit certain points in class then out in the street we are expected to change and hit on a different target?

From my 10 years past experience in working as a security officer in local nightclubs and giving the service of VIP protection I can assure you that out there is different from training with a partner who you know that he/she will never hurt you!! I‘m not saying that as I worked in the security field, I must know the realistic way, but for sure I met and was caught in many different situations. And that’s why during class training we must adopt different situations of how an attack or an aggressor might come to us, it is not just techniques and movements, (at least that’s the way we do lessons in the WingTsun Leung Ting system)

For a student who wants to join a school first, he/she has to decide which way to go. As a martial sport in our country we do really have good and dedicated Instructors. But if a student wants to do self defence then it is much more important to find which school can offer the most effective and the right training to achieve and apprehend self defence techniques and realistic way of protection.

Normally when you go to a school that teaches realistic self defence you do not see trophies around as it is not a sport style, (though it could be that the club have competed with no success!!)

To end, I would like to tell you this, the best defence is that you will never get in trouble so always try to find a way not to get into fights, and hope no one will have to use any kind of defence but also this could only happen once in a life time so always be prepared, you will never know when, where or at what time you are going to meet your aggressor!!
