Rugby: Kavallieri Win Barclays Cup

Malta Independent Thursday, 19 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

With a scintillating display of rugby skill and discipline, Kavallieri added the Barclays Cup to their earlier Cisk Lager League Trophy; they never looked like being beaten.

From the opening whistle they dominated the first half territorially, spending the majority of the time inside their opponents’ 22 metre line, playing a fine brand of 15 man rugby. The combination of forward driving power and slick timed back moves had Overseas on the back foot and defending desperately. To their credit they did not succumb easily and defended gallantly, but lacked forward experience, particularly at prop.

Kavallieri had expected to miss key players who were either away in Prague or resting for the Denmark international, but the reserves, such as Adrian Bartolo, rose to the occasion and played a storming game.

Again the two centres, Irishman Allen and Aussie Rodgers, brought discipline, rhythm and timing to the Kavallieri line which stretched the Overseas from side to side.

The first try was a Kavallieri trademark forward rush and maul, the second by Attard was a fter Allen, Rodgers and created the overlap with a neat break and combined with Bonavia.

Reuben Vella added two tries and Allen a penalty for the half time to be 24-0 to the Kavallieri.

The second half saw the Overseas more in the game as it deteriorated to become scrappy at times, and after Borda scored another Kavallieri try, Lewis got one back for Overseas so that at this stage Overseas were winning the second half 7-5 .

Kavallieri were not playing as well as before, especially when Allen and Rodgers went off. However, Daniel Grima came on and immediately their game picked up and the scores recommenced. Reuben Vella added his third try and Rod Attard scored after a weaving run.

A thoroughly deserved win for a good side who have proved themselves the best and are worthy champions.
