A Cardinal’s Hat

Malta Independent Sunday, 22 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Mr L. Pace

Some have opined and I have often thought about it, that having a Cardinal as head of the Maltese diocese would rekindle the religious fervour of our islands. Many think it would help the islanders no end, as spiritual considerations now seem to be on holiday, and in many instances away from the island for good.

For how much longer will the unfairness of having the rent of a meter much higher than the rent of a house carry on? How much longer can the islanders forget that honesty is the best policy? At one time death made the Maltese feel uncomfortable but it doesn’t seem to do so any longer.

How much longer will we tolerate the public bear false witness against one’s neighbour, flagrant lies under oath in court and elsewhere, now taken as the order of the day, without any consideration? And regarded with nonchalance?

Perhaps a Cardinal’s hat will make us feel that noise and bangs are not really a part of the national religion; that pique is not for the educated mind and that siding with Our Lady of Mount Carmel against Our Lady of Lourdes is ridiculous in the extreme; and that people are elected for the common good and not merely to help themselves.

Many think the time is ripe for a Cardinal’s hat. It should be a national tonic and our next objective.

L. Pace
