Two Weights, two measures

Malta Independent Monday, 23 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Last Tuesday, I watched the discussion about Fr Mark Montebello on Bondiplus.

The discussion was indeed very interesting with a number of contrasting views expressed. I was, however, totally shocked by the utter arrogance shown by Peppi Azzopardi (photo) towards the end of the show.

Towards the end Peppi Azzopardi declared that those people who went to Mass every Sunday and then backed the US war against Iraq are not true Christians.

It is no secret that I was, and still am, one of those who agreed with the war against Iraq. The war against Iraq was a political issue, an issue which regarded democracy, freedom and liberty. By whose right does Mr Azzopardi say that I am not a true Christian?

Is he a true Christian, because if memory serves me right, Mr Azzopardi is the man who has several times taken a different stance to that taken by the Pope.

Peppi Azzopardi has long been a preacher of liberty and the freedom of expression. On several occasions he has praised Xarabank precisely because it gives people the chance to air their views. Yet Peppi Azzopardi, last Tuesday, decided to label those who have a different view than his on the war in Iraq.

Isn’t this a case of two weights two measures?
