Local Football: Dronca Leaving Stripes and Gango Rtsa is a possible replacement

Malta Independent Tuesday, 24 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The FA Trophy final 2-1 win over Msida St Joseph may perhaps have been the last match for Birkirkara’s Romanian central defender Lucian Dronca (picture).

The elegant defender, one of the best foreign players gracing Maltese football in recent years, is out of contract, but according to the Stripes official website, he is seeking pastures new as he is moving to Singapore to join a first division club coached by former Floriana mentor Bencherifa.

Dronca will first undergo medical tests and then discuss contract terms before deciding on whether he should move on. Dronca himself stated that he will be leaving behind very fond memories of Birkirkara FC and their fantastic supporters.

If things don’t turn out right in Singapore, he will be interested in discussing a new contract with his ‘home club’. Dronca has been a first choice player for the past four seasons, becoming their penalty king.

The Romanian had become well known in Malta not just for his football qualities, but also for his gentlemanly conduct, both on and off the field of play.

Meanwhile unconfirmed reports said yesterday that the Stripes were eyeing Floriana’s Ghanaian strong central defender Gango Rtsa as Dronca’s possible replacement.

Gango Rtsa has also left a good impression for the Greens since his arrival in Malta, though during the past season, he was plagued by injury which kept him out for long periods.
