Bowling – Middlesea Valletta Life National league (week 19): Fina Excel steal second place from Ramis

Malta Independent Thursday, 26 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

With four weeks remaining of the current Middlesea Valletta Life National league at the Eden SuperBowl, and 32 points still up for grabs, Aercomms have basically got the title in the bag after this week’s 0-8 win over the Blues Brothers places them 29 points ahead.

The main interest now is where the trophies for second and third place will end up, as no less than six teams are jostling position with just ten points separating second and seventh place.

Fina Excel played the match of the week to steal second place from Ramis, while sister team Fina First remain third after a disappointing draw with Right Deal.

There was a full point victory for Royal Shock against Storm, while Globalair Travel and The Rascals picked up majority wins against Veltins and Alley Catz respectively.

This tight situation meant that Fina Excel’s 0-8 pummelling of Ramis meant that they shot up from fifth to second place, actually swapping places with Ramis.

The first game was Excel’s best of the night, the 734-835 thrashing putting them in fine fettle for the remaining two. They were never really worried by their opponents as they claimed game two 744-780 before sealing Ramis’ fate with a 759-795 finale.

Mark Spiteri (Fina Excel, bowler of the week) - 624, Charles Farrugia (Ramis) - 584.

Leaders Aercomms were big winners again, this time relegation candidates the Blues Brothers being their unlucky victims. Game one could have seen the underdogs take two points as only 14 pins separated the teams, 707-721 the low game score, but Aercomms soon found their feet and notched up a big 809 in game two against a pitiful 663 from the opposition.

The Blues Brothers were under 700 again in the third, but only just as Aercomms cruised to a 696-787 win. Kenneth Arpa (Aercomms) - 618, Giancarlo Tolu (Blues Brothers) - 575.

Fina First have suffered this season, compared to their infamous league dominating past history, and were fortunate to walk off with an equal share of the points from their confrontation with Right Deal (8th) in week 19.

It was the latter who opened the scoring with an easy 809-732 drubbing of Fina First, and they then rode the winning wave by taking the much closer second with 764 pins to Fina’s 748 effort. 91 pins ahead going into game three, Right Deal must have been confident of the match win, and maybe that was their downfall.

All they could muster was a low 725 as Fina First yanked themselves back into the match with a great 832 game, thus claiming the series points by just 14 pins to force the draw (2,298-2,312). Melissa Camenzuli (Right Deal) - 623, Steve Cassar (Fina First) - 602.

Globalair Travel’s 2-6 result against Veltins sees them improve to fourth place with a fighting chance of some silverware this season. It was a tit-for-tat affair as Globalair clinched the opener with ease, 628-758 the result, before a total role reversal in game two in which Veltins levelled it with an 847-737 winner.

Globalair held a slight 20 pin advantage, and their 707-781 win in game three was enough to secure victory. David Debono (Globalair Travel) - 574, Mark Muscat and Justin Caruana Scicluna (Veltins) - 538.

Surely too little, too late for bottom team Royal Shock who pulled of an 8-0 win over tenth team Storm this week after a terrible overall display from the losing side.

Royal Shock started on a high to win game one 818-666, and they also took game two with relative ease, 717-656. Storm’s best effort came in the closing game, but Royal Shock clinched it by 23 pins (723-700) to claim a rare full-point victory. Joe Cassar (Royal Shock) - 601, George Deguara (Storm) - 555.

Six points also for the Rascals (9th) at the expense of Alley Cats (7th) who had to settle for a quarter share of the points.

The Rascals got off to a flying start by winning game one convincingly 823-732, but the Rascals were soon level as they stole game two 676-725. So it was all to play for in game three, The Rascals holding the advantage over the first two games. They capitalised on that by winning the third 717-658 to grab the lion’s share. Philippe Vancell (The Rascals) - 546, Lorraine Casha (Alley Catz) - 594.
