Choosing Words carefully

Malta Independent Sunday, 29 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Mr A. Caruana Galizia

If Dr Harry Vassallo, of Alternattiva Demokratika, hadn’t thought fit to comment on the absence of any religious service at the funeral of my cousin, Julian Manduca (TMIS, 22 May), then probably I would have kept silent on the matter too. But since Dr Vassallo did comment, I see no reason why I, a close relative of Julian’s, shouldn’t speak my mind as well.

Yes, I was one of those (probably the vast but silent majority of Julian’s extended family) who, unlike Dr Vassallo, were dismayed at the absence of a religious service at Julian’s funeral, or of any prayers at his graveside.

But whoever said that we thought “our” God did not love Julian? Whoever suggested anything of the kind? It is only Dr Vassallo who said this, not any of us.

So I would suggest that next time, before passing judgement on others, Dr Vassallo should think very very carefully.

Anton Caruana Galizia
