Games For European Small States: Delayed start to Opening Ceremony draws jeers towards IOC president Rogge

Malta Independent Tuesday, 31 May 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A 30 minute delay to the start of yesterday’s opening ceremony led to jeers and boos towards the President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Jacques Rogge as he made his appearance in Andorra.

The ceremony, in all its simplicity and held in a small camping site, provided a good spectacle of light and gave start to the 11th edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe.

The lighting of the flame was followed by the parade of all participating athletes from the eight countries taking part.

The hoisting of the Games flag and the singing of the Games’ anthem preceded speeches by Manuel Fernandez, president of the organising committee and IOC president Jacques Rogge.

The official inauguration of the Games was made by H.E. the co-prince Mgr Joan Enric Vives followed by fireworks.
