Seats And votes

Malta Independent Thursday, 2 June 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

It’s that issue again. Everybody is arguing and claiming that his idea is the best and fairest. In our little island there are many people who care a lot about politics and even fight for their beliefs. Not so overseas – in fact, I still remember when I had to pay $50 Australian dollars because I did not bother to vote. I am not saying that we should not vote, but to fight over politics is a bit stupid.

Back to the subject. If, and only if, the three political parties did care and wanted the only fair and honest way to elect their MP, there is a very easy and safe way. But are they really trying? All they have to do is ask voters to tick one of three boxes on the ballot sheet blue, red or green. That way the results will be out within two hours after the election.

The party with the most votes will be elected to govern. As far as the members of parliament are concerned, the three parties should do their utmost to build up their party with the smartest possible people on the island.

They should include industrialists, teachers, people from different technical fields, solicitors, church people, doctors and so on.

By doing so, we will know that the people in our parliament will and can argue about different subjects, for the good of all, because they will be people with knowledge on different subjects and, in that way, a lot of good will result.

What’s more, in every election there are always those five or six thousand votes that go to the green party, and that should make for at least one chair in parliament.

Then the three parties would stop fighting each other about the number of votes per chair or the number of members according to the votes, and stop talking about placing Ghajnsielem with Mellieha or some other part.

Everybody with a head on their shoulder will tell you that this is the fairest system, but the six million dollar question is whether the parties want it? If not, why? Well you all know I suppose.
