Daphne Caruana Galizia took issue (TMID, 9 June) with the Maltese MEPs who are trying to use their right to communicate their message to other MEPs in Maltese. She is perfectly right in asking why would one want to spend taxpayers’ money to deliver speeches in Maltese when one can deliver them more effectively in English.

One of the effective promotional tools that the YES campaign used was that Maltese would have been one of the official languages of the EU. Along with such billboards as those telling people that the EU is “for the good of our children”, these statements had the necessary emotional appeal to make people say YES without thinking of the real implications of Malta joining the EU.

At no time before the EU referendum in Malta did Daphne Caruana Galizia make the argument she is making now about the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of using the Maltese language to communicate in Brussels. But be that as it may, and having chided our MEPs for insisting on using Maltese in Brussels, would she now be good enough to chide the current administration for (a) fighting so hard to include Maltese as one of the official EU languages (b) misleading the public prior to the EU referendum on the use of Maltese in Brussels and (c) wasting taxpayers’ money.
