European Union In crisis

From Mr E. Micallef Figallo

It is an undeniable fact that the European Union is in severe crisis, which is leading to statements that highlight divergences on many different grounds. The recent summit highlighted a severe crack, and the EU is suffering severe blows one after the other. This hinders the Eurocrats’ plan for further political integration on a European supranational level. In its federalist and supranational frenzy, the European Union is fundamentally against a Europe of Nations.

Excluding the obvious discontent of renowned EU-sceptics, criticism towards the European Union and towards individual member States and their representatives is now growing. One would dare question whether a definite crack in the European Union is a possibility, and if not, whether it is evitable.

Of particular interest on the politico-ideological level is the declaration by the current President of the EU, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, which according to euobserver.com stated that the EU is currently divided into a pro-free trade camp and a camp that favours a political EU. This comes as no surprise to me, as I have stated repeatedly that the EU is essentially a dichotomic entity that until this crisis featured a form of unity that was bound to break. This dichotomy exists between the pro-capitalist plutocratic economic camp and the liberal-left political camp that is the main promoter of the now famous, if not defamed, “European political integration”.

Regarding the question euobserver.com states that, “speaking of the ‘two philosophies’,” Mr Juncker said, “I knew the time would come when all this would come out”.” In Juncker’s opinion, the road should be towards further political integration but this has an uncertain future due to the resounding “non” and “nee” in France and Holland respectively in relation to the ratification of the EU Constitution. The Constitution’s ratification by the 25 member States has been delayed.

In relation to the Constitution’s ratification, we have seen the highly undemocratic attitude of certain member States that have decided to postpone or cancel the referendums planned to ratify the EU Constitution. All this, when in our own Malta the representatives of the people have decided that this crucial decision for the future of our nation does not merit popular consultation. We have been denied the right to safeguard our nation, when the party in government has the misnomer of “Partit Nazzjonalista”.

Turning to a European level, we notice that the EU crisis takes many varied forms that all attack the essence of the EU, European cooperation and supranationalism. Juncker called the UK’s attitude “pathetic” in the latest summit, which has always been intrinsically insular and EU-sceptic by default. At the same time, in neighbouring Italy, the Ministro del Lavoro e delle Politiche Sociali Roberto Maroni, of the regionalist right-wing Lega Nord, urged discussions on the EMU’s single currency. In fact, as in Italy, one of the major proponents of the euro and one of the most pro-EU member States, criticism of the EU is spreading throughout all Europe after being predominantly pushed by EU-sceptic, anti-EU, and nationalist/right-wing forces on the continent.

Such criticism is gaining ground in many areas of Europe on many issues. As one example, one only needs to mention Jean-Marie Le Pen’s Front National (FN) in France, one of the leading nationalist and anti-EU political forces in Europe. The FN has repeatedly advocated the idea of withdrawing from the EU, and one notices that the FN is gaining ground as the years pass. The FN was a leading figure in the “non” referendum campaign.

The FN is only one of the growing nationalist right movements in Europe. Such movements are creating a force which, by working on a national level, are providing a safeguard for European civilisation as a whole, while at the same time a false anti-nationalist propaganda depicts conflicts between various nationalists, which are mostly unfounded and are no more serious than squabbles between other political formations. The current malaise between certain European exponents in relation to the EU is in fact much worse than any modern conflict between nationalists on a European level.

Some of the positions taken by such movements are pro-native and anti-immigration, a greater and truer social conscience linked by the bonds of kith and kin, and a greater respect for our European indigenous cultures. Another important position is the protection of the European economy and of European labourers on a continental and/or national level. Most importantly, a truer conception of progress must be promoted. Such a conception would be detached from liberal “progressive” attitudes, which neglect and deny our traditions and our own national and European self.

Of paramount importance is that any true nationalist right movement in Europe and Malta should have pro-Catholic/Christian positions as these are seen as a fundamental aspect of our civilisation. We must also remember that in Malta, the “Nazzionalisti” of old, prided themselves for having the Latin motto “Religio et Patria”. This would obviously put aside the liberal pro-multicultural infiltrations suffered by the Curia, which is fomenting a disgusting anti-clericalism within the population due to illegal immigration and other questions. The above is true nationalism in a pro-European context. Such nationalism is intrinsically pro-national, pro-European civilisation, and EU-sceptic/Anti-EU. There is bound to be such a movement in Malta, if our political spectrum remains so focused to the left. Returning to the EU, one wonders whether those who voted “iva” in the EU accession referendum are now happy with their decisions. I proudly voted “le” in favour of our nation’s independence and sovereignty and against an EU order that is profoundly liberal leftist, capitalist, and materialist at the same time. As a true Maltese nationalist, in values and ideology, this is the only credible position.

As a consideration, one should consider the words of our own Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, who declared that we are in a “qaghda inkwetanti”. One can only say “verissimu” to that, especially if one is pro-EU as our governing party.

I would like to conclude, that this crisis and/or temporary defeat of the European Union, is not a defeat for European Civilisation and our respective European nations, but rather a defeat for its greatest enemy, the European Union itself.
