The Difference between CO and CO2

Malta Independent Sunday, 3 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

From Mr R. Bird

Can someone please explain what the concern over CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions in car exhausts is all about? CO2 is a gas which is normally exhaled when breathing and is converted by plants and trees in their growth cycle then broken down into carbon (c) and oxygen (02) during the day.

As a young apprentice motor mechanic I was warned that CO (carbon monoxide) was one of the components of car fumes and was the “killer gas”, one to be avoided at all costs – it is the one used in suicides.

Do car exhaust fumes contain both CO and C02?
