Rent Reforms

Malta Independent Wednesday, 27 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Mark Tanti, in his letter entitled Rent reform (TMID 25 July) completely misses the whole point of Alternattiva Demokratika’s proposed rent reform.

Does Mr Tanti think that an individual should bear the weight of subsidising grossly uneconomical rents, or should it be the duty of society as a whole, Mr Tanti and myself included, to carry the burden of a social obligation?

I know of one particular case, where a tenant far wealthier than his landlord, refused to accept the free transfer of the title of his rented property, unless the landlord agreed to pay for urgent repairs to a derelict balcony, out of a paltry rent of Lm15 per annum.

Where a hardship results from the proposed reforms, it will be the duty of the State to carry the burden and not the long suffering private landlord.
