Active Citizenship

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

I would like to thank the crowd of people who did their best to attend the educational event organised by Ceratonia (Gozo Section), the non-political wing of AD, on Saturday 13th August in Sannat and Ta’ Cenc.

This educational event was meant to raise people’s awareness about the aesthetic, ecological, archaeological, ornitological and cultural value of the Ta’ Cenc area that we stand to lose if proposed development projects comes true.

This crowd comprised of Maltese and foreigners living in Malta who crossed to attend the event together with a group of Gozitans and foreigners living in Gozo.

It is thanks to these that a crowd of 300 people gathered in the square of Sannat and walked peacefully towards to Ta’ Cenc, following PUBLIC signs indicating the way to the Ta’ Cenc, Dolmens, Cliffs and Mramma Temples. This number really gave witness to the fact that there ARE people who care for and appreciate the environment and are interested in how it is managed.

I am sorry that last Saturday, they weren’t given the opportunity to really enjoy what was rightfully theirs to enjoy and ended up protesting peacefully instead. Yet, it was not in vain. It is such numbers which will make a difference in safeguarding our citizenship right to enjoy our environment and its’ open spaces!

The people present are but one example of active citizenship. I am sure others will follow and join in our next events.
