The Grim reality of the terrible bus service

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

I am a first time visitor to the Maltese islands. The past two weeks in Malta were very satisfactory, especially concerning the visits to the monuments, museums, churches and other tourist attractions.

On the whole, I am definitely happy to have chosen Malta as my holiday destination and will strongly recommend it to my friends.

After reading the “Lonely Planet” guide, I was already aware of the fact that using the public transport system in Malta could be dangerous. Notwithstanding this, reality was even worse. The problems encountered were: the ancient buses (many of which desperately need some maintenance) and the behaviour of the bus drivers.

Examples of this bad behaviour are the constant use of mobile phones while driving, the lack of respect for the highway code and, in some cases, the impolite conduct.

One particular driver was more focused on the female beauty on the side of the road rather than the road itself.

Finally, I would like to recommend to the authority to organise a quick maths course for its drivers as sometimes it seems they do not give the right change. However, for a strange reason, these mistakes always seems to be to the detriment of the clients.
