Hockey: Malta Beaten by Denmark

Malta Independent Thursday, 8 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Yesterday’s match between hosts Malta and Denmark was certainly a closer affair than the first one.

Malta got off to a good start with David Agius finishing off a good short corner move to open the score.

All of a sudden, the score was in the Danes’ favour with two penalty corner routines hitting the backboard with a hapless Mizzi in the Maltese goal.

It looked like an uphill struggle for the

Maltese side but they didn’t put their heads down and kept on fighting.

In the second half, in a swift counter attack the Danes won a penalty corner with the same result as the first two. 3-1 for Denmark.

Kevin Micallef pulled one back for Malta, but the Danes managed to score again through a swift counter attack.

In the other match, a depleted Azerbaijan side defeated Cyprus 5-0.

Azerbaijan will be meeting Cyprus again in the first semifinal tomorrow at 1pm. Malta will meet Denmark again in the following match at 3.30pm.
