Hockey – European Nations Challenge: Unlucky Malta Beaten by Danish golden goal

Malta Independent Saturday, 10 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Malta just missed the chance to contest the final against Azerbaijan yesterday when it lost 2-1 to Denmark who scored a golden goal in the third minute of extra time to advance to today’s final.

It was a hard blow for Malta who had taken the lead through David Agius on seven minutes. The Danes then equalised but just before the interval, Malta was awarded a penalty. Quite unfortunately, the half-time buzzer went through just ahead of the umpire’s whistle for the penalty to be taken and Malta missed the chance of taking a

2-1 lead at the interval. In the second half, play was shared by both sides but no goals were registered until the Danes got their victory through that golden goal.

In the other match, Azerbaijan defeated Cyprus 3-1.

Today at 1pm, Malta plays Cyprus for the third place and at 3.30pm, Azerbaijan and Denmark will contest the final.
