Tarxien Rainbows beat San Gwann in a keenly contested encounter to go third in the table. The match was balanced for long stretches and Tarxien only had the edge following the penalty incident at the start of the second half. In this incident Chris Cuschieri was sent off, and San Gwann were subdued with ten men.

For Tarxien, Brazilian Da Silva played a great match and is an asset for this team in this category.

Tarxien had a better start and went ahead on 15 minutes when Simon Shead received from Coleiro and beat Spiteri with a perfect grounder. Tarxien continued to press for a second goal and Spiteri saved a good shot by Schembri following a good move between Tabone and Camenzuli.

San Gwann’s first danger came on 27 minutes when their captain, Antonio Saliba headed well from a Zammit Tabona corner, but his header was blocked by Curmi. However, three minutes later San Gwann obtained a deserved equaliser, when Anizoba’s good shot destined for the net could only be partially blocked by Curmi and from the rebound Kevin Loughborough levelled the score.

The match was now more balanced but Tarxien went back in front in stoppage time. The returning Manuel Caruana managed to shoot home from the edge of the area, with the ball passing through a crowded penalty area.

At the start of the second half, San Gwann went very close with an Anizoba header but Curmi effected a great save.

On 51 minutes Da Silva was floored by Chris Cuschieri, with referee Tanti awarding the penalty and sending the same Cuschieri for dissent. From the penalty spot Alan Tabone made no mistake.

Two goals down and a player less, San Gwann surged desperately forward but Tarxien went close to scoring further goals as they caught the San Gwann defence off guard. Coleiro missed two easy chances in front of goal, following good passes by Tabone.
