Football – Bank Of Valletta Premier League: St George’s sole leaders after fourth consecutive victory

Malta Independent Monday, 3 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

St George’s notched their fourth consecutive victory beating Naxxar 3-1 in a one sided match. Following Marsa’s draw against Lija the day before, the Saints are now sole leaders with maximum points.

Although the Saints’ position is a surprising one, however it is a deserved one, as they are surely playing the better football.

Guided by a bunch of experienced players like Jesmond Delia, Silvio Sciberras, Patrick Muscat and Edgar Degabriele, the Saints’ main star is Anthony Ewurun. This attacker is lethal in front of goal, and his speed and continuous roaming, creates space for the other striker Trevor Thomas. Another player who is showing all his worth is midfielder Keith Darmanin, a gifted player that possesses good technical qualities.

As for Naxxar it was another disappointing display following their drubbing against Marsa. Coach Dennis Fenech must work hard, especially in defence, where the Lions’ main problems are. In attack Dozie needs support from Muscat and Gilbert Camilleri, but these two players had an off day yesterday.

St George’s made their intentions clear from the start as they pushed forward in search for an early goal. On ten minutes they forged ahead when Bonello scored from close range following a good save by Cini, off an Ewurun deflection.

St George’s continued with their attacking spree, keeping the Naxxar goalkeeper under constant pressure. Thomas had a good header blocked by Cini, and Ewurun missed a good opportunity following one of his typical runs.

On 23 minutes from a Darmanin freekick, Clive Brincat, completely unmarked, missed an easy chance for the Saints. Naxxar’s first attempt came on 35 minutes with a Clifford Mifsud scorcher saved by Gatt.

Four minutes from time Ewurun doubled the score when he beat Cini with a grounder from the edge of the area. In the dying minutes of the first half, Trevor Thomas failed to score the third goal in front of Cini and on the other end, Andrea Gatt denied Dozie with a splendid save.

In the second half the Saints remained the better team and Thomas missed another good chance in front of goal early in the second half. On 74 minutes St George’s scored their third goal, with another good move by Anthony Ewurun, who dribbled past Schembri and Zammit, before beating Cini with a fierce drive from the heart of the penalty area.

In injury time Naxxar scored their consolation goal when Chima Dozie managed to beat substitute goalkeeper Bonnici following a pass by Chetcuti.
