Bank Of Valletta First Division: Senglea back in business

Malta Independent Monday, 31 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Senglea Athletics returned to winning form, beating Mqabba with the odd goal in three in a keenly contested match. The points gained helped Senglea to catch the same Mqabba in fourth place, and the win is a morale booster for a side with promotion ambitions.

Senglea had a better start with an Abela header missing the target following a Jason Borg cross from the left.

On 21 minutes Jason Borg opened the score with a splendid run on the left flank beating Calleja with a low shot from an acute angle. Five minutes later Mqabba had a good opportunity, with Anywanna denied by a fine Agius save. Mqabba had a good spell but Senglea had the better opportunities after the half-hour with Abela hitting slightly wide, and with Jason Borg missing a sitter in front of goal.

Just before the break, Senglea doubled the score when from another Jason Borg cross from the left, Kenneth Abela headed in past a hesitant Calleja.

In the second half Mqabba produced great pressure as they surged forward in their desperate quest to save the match. On their part Senglea had to defend for long stretches. On 77 minutes Mqabba deservedly reduced the arrears with a good goal scored by their best player John Paul Muscat who managed to beat Agius with a low shot from just inside the area.
