Bank Of Valltetta First Division: Precious win for San Gwann

Malta Independent Monday, 31 October 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

San Gwann obtained a precious victory in the lower part of the table against Lija, as they now moved above the same opponents in the table.

It was a hard earned and merited victory in a rather low profile match. San Gwann were the better team and only lost hold of the match in the initial stages of the second half. However when Anizoba scored their second goal, they played the better football and could have added a third one near the end.

Play was mainly in midfield, with San Gwann having the edge over their opponents with Anizoba, who was returning from injury, always menacing.

On 33 minutes San Gwann took the lead when Loughborough nodded to Karl Sciberas whose great shot on the turn from the edge of the area beat Mercieca for a well taken goal.

A minute later Lija could have obtained an immediate equaliser when John Camilleri hit the post from close range with the San Gwann defence caught napping.

Lija dominated the first part of the second half and were unlucky not to obtain the equaliser when a John Camilleri header destined for the back of the net, was blocked off the fatal line by Luke Vella Critien.

San Gwann withstood the pressure and gave the killer blow on 67 minutes with a swift counter break, with danger man Anizoba finishing off the move in style.

San Gwann were now back in command and although Lija held the initaive they rarely tested Spiteri apart from a point blank shot by Scicluna near the end.
