One hundred and thirty Maltese athletes and some foreigners took part in the recent Zurrieq half marathon in brilliant sunshine.

Belgian runner Christian Nemmeth (picture) won the event in a record time of 1:09:56, that is, two seconds better than he had registered the previous year.

Second was Jonathan Balzan of St Patricks and third Charles Cilia of AS Libertas. They were followed by Joseph Abdilla of Zurrieq Wolves, Drew Lang of St Patricks and Robert Attard of Mellieha Athletics.

In the female category, Carol Walsh, formerly Galea, of Athleta Pembroke, was again in outstanding form, winning the event in a time of 1:23:35. Lisa Bezzina, also of Athleta Pembroke, was second, while Cecilia Fenech of Zurrieq Wolves, was third. Carmen Hili of St Patricks was fourth.
