Malta Independent Saturday, 26 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Investment by the Malta Olympic Committee and the Malta Shooting Federation in the ‘Outstanding Athlete Scheme’ which athlete William Chetcuti will be benefiting over next three years in the run-up to the Olympic Games included his recent ISSF World Cup Final participation in Dubai where he finished in 4th place.

This placing following his 7th place overall in the Brazil World Cup and his 9th placing at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, reflects that with regular participation at high profile competitions will help William gain the necessary experience to better his prospects and make Malta proud as our top international sporting ambassador.

Pippo Psaila, Director of Sport advises that William’s progress can be reflected in our investment and support and can be seen in his results. 2006 will see William representing Malta at high profile events such as Grand Prix’s, ISSF World Cups, ISSF World Championships, European Championships, World Cups, and the next important multi disciplinary sporting event the Melbourne Commonwealth Games; his participation will be supported and backed by the ‘Quest for Glory’ outstanding athlete scheme of the Malta Olympic Committee.

The MOC are currently preparing its Malta Team for the Commonwealth Games which will take place in March 2006 in Melbourne Australia. Since Malta’s participation at these Games back in 1958 (Wales, UK) Malta has sent up a contingent eight times and to-date have brought back two medals. Laurie Pace won a bronze medal in Judo at the 1990 Auckland New Zealand Games and William Chetcuti took bronze at the last edition of the 2002 Manchester Games.

The Commonwealth Games have undoubtedly reached a very high level of competition and the MOC believes that with the schemes and support available to our athletes we will see more and better results. The MOC believes that with the steady progress being made by our athletes we can only hope to see a higher placing producing our best performances ever at these Games.
