Local Officials control matches in volleyball competitions

Malta Independent Sunday, 18 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The three local international referees were involved in a number of matches from the qualification groups of European volleyball cups, lately, with this being the first official experience for the newest of the three, Marvic Micallef, who obtained the international candidate status in April this year, during the course held in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Micallef’s first experience was in Bratislava, the Slovakian capital, in a qualification group from the men’s CEV Cup (equivalent to the UEFA Cup in football).

Besides the home team, Micallef officiated matches in which the three other teams taking part were involved, namely Patras (Greece), Amriswil (Switzerland) and Paphos (Cyprus).

On the other hand, the other two international referees, Nello Calleja and Frankie Tanti (photo), were officiating in qualification groups of the women’s CEV Cup, the former in Oldenzaal, Holland, while Tanti was in Gent, Belgium. Calleja has now reached the amount of international matches needed to accede to the full international status, while Tanti is just one match away from obtaining the same status.
