Youth Football: Gzira Edge Pembroke in low key match

Malta Independent Friday, 23 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A draw was a fair result as no side dominated the other. Both sets of defences made it very difficult to the opposing forwards.

A flagkick by Gary Caruana was partially cleared and Chris Bugeja’s rebound shot missed Attard’s upright.

Emerson Abela put Chris Abela through but Attard keeper Paul Bugeja foiled him with a timely sortie. Chris Abela then pounced on a faulty clearance but his shot missed Attard’s upright.

Marsaxlokk keeper Luca Bugeja saved on Kurt Zahra and did likewise a while later after he was put through by Nigel Spiteri. Zahra put Owen Tabone through but drove out from an ideal position.

Attard went straight on the offensive after the restart.

Zahra put Andrew Agius through but his shot missed the seasiders’ upright by inches.

He then put substitute Julian Iweuke through but Bugeja foiled him with a timely sortie and he also neutralised a Zahra dangerous cross.

In a Marsaxlokk reaction Stefan Cutajar put Daniel Farrugia through but Paul Bugeja saved his grounder.

Luca Bugeja then saved on Iweuke after being put through by Andrew Agius.

Daniel Farrugia should have scored for Marsaxlokk on 50 minutes after a perfect through ball by Stefan Cutajar but he delayed his shot and a good chance was lost.

A very low standard game where methodical play was very lacking with both keepers rarely troubled as shots at goal were very scarce.

Gzira created the first occasions. Davide Monaco put Alan Francica through but Pembroke keeper Matthew Psaila foiled him with a timely sortie. Andrew Micallef put Keith Scerri through but Gzira defender Mauro Leonardi foiled him with a timely clearance.

Clayton Attard put Francica through and his first-timer missed Pembroke’s bar by inches, at the other end, Micallef put Keith Scerri through but Gzira keeper Christian Fenech neutralised his cross and he also saved in two attempts by Scerri.

Just before half-time Robert Casa handled the ball outside the area and Farrugia’s freekick shot missed Pembroke’s upright by inches.

There were only five actions worthy of note in the final 40 minutes. Nicholai Gauci crossed to Attard but the latter’s shot missed the upright. From a Casa flagkick, Farrugia headed towards Gzira’s area and Gzira keeper Fenech saved on Chris Buttigieg.

Farrugia put Scerri through but his shot missed the upright with Fenech beaten and Andrew Micallef crossed to Casa who also missed the upright.

Gzira scored the all-important goal on the hour. From a Fenech long drop kick, Pembroke defender Joshua Ebejer headed the ball the wrong way and came in the path of Nicholai Gauci who, after advancing, scored with an angled low shot from the edge of the area.
