Youth Football: Attard and Dingli turn defeat into victory

Attard turned defeat into victory. Rabat enjoyed more of the exchanges in the first period, but Attard had more of the exchanges after resumption. It was a keen and action-packed game.

Rabat forged ahead on 10 minutes. George Portelli put Wingfield through who netted with a low shot on entering the area.

Attard reacted after this early setback. Daniel Agius put Mark Saliba through but he drove well off target and from a Kyle Schembri free kick, Saliba headed over the bar when well placed.

On 17 minutes Attard restored equilibrium. From a Matthew Scerri perfect cross Saliba headed in past Rabat ‘keeper Joseph Agius.

On 25 minutes, Matthew Fenech of Attard had to be rushed to hospital as he fractured his wrist when falling on his hand during a tackle.

Five minutes after restart Attard scored a second goal. Kyle Schembri floated a perfect ball from a free kick in Rabat’s area, and with the Rabat defenders doing the standstill act, in nipped Daniel Agius who shot the ball in the roof of the net.

Attard resumed their pressure and a shot by Saliba missed the bar by inches, a Daniel Agius shot also missed the bar by inches.

In a Rabat rare attack, a Wingfield shot missed the upright after a Charlot Ciantar cross.

Mark Saliba was then fouled outside Rabat’s area and the free kick shot by the same player missed the upright by inches, at the other end, Cini partially saved in Jean P Ciantar after a Wingfield cross with the ball being cleared.

Four minutes before the end Attard were reduced to ten men as substitute Brandon Tabone, after only a few minutes on the pitch was shown the red card for elbowing an opponent in an off the ball incident.

After suffering the early pressure, Dingli rallied back from a 0-1 deficit in a second half onslaught in which they dominated their opponents.

Dingli created the first occasion as Gudja keeper Steve Buttigieg had to turn into a corner a shot by Jeffrey Ferriggi after dribbling past an opponent, at the other end, Dingli 'keeper Karl Sammut saved on Keith Cassar after being put through by Robert Portelli, and a flag kick by Robert Portelli was cleared to another corner.

Gudja took the lead on the half hour. Roderick Caruana won the ball from a faulty drop kick by Dingli 'keeper Karl Sammut and scored with a rising shot from 35 meters.

Dingli dominated the second period. Buttigieg foiled Jonathan Falzon with a timely sortie after being put through by Godfrey Galea.

In Gudja’s only action, Sammut saved in two attempts on Keith Cassar after a Roderick Caruana cross.

Buttigieg saved a half volley by Eric Galea and a shot by Ferriggi missed the upright by inches after a Chris Muscat through ball, he also saved on Ferriggi after a Godfrey Galea cross.

Six minutes before the end Dingli equalised. Clifton Mifsud was fouled just outside Gudja’s area and from the resultant free kick Ferriggi netted a beauty with a rising shot, and three minutes later they scored the winning goal as a Clifton Mifsud found Eric Galea well placed in Gudija's area and made no mistake from close range.
