Bank Of Valletta first division: Mqabba demolish Marsa to get back in hunt

Malta Independent Monday, 6 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Mqabba were in a class of their own yesterday against Marsa demolishing the Red Blues to get back in the promotion hunt. For Marsa this second consecutive defeat should sound as a strong warning and coach Molzahn should start worrying about this slump in form of his team.

Mqabba were dominant in the first half gaining a two-goal lead, and turned the match in a training session in the final part, when Marsa missed a penalty and had their goalkeeper sent off.

The match had a quiet start with Mqabba showing more determination. However the match came bang into life on 17 minutes when Anywanna passed to Martin Borg who beat a couple of defenders before hitting low into the net from the edge of the area.

Two minutes later with Marsa still under shock, Mqabba doubled the score with one of the best goals seen so far this season. John Paul Muscat dribbled past a number of players before passing to Marlon Briffa who squared to Chirs Borg who first timed beautifully into the net with the ball hitting the crossbar before finishing at the back of the net.

Mqabba were now in full command of the proceedings with Marsa looking a helpless lot. Muscat, Marlon Briffa, and Busuttil were in a class of their own, with Marsa unable to keep the pace.

On 33 minutes an Anywanna header was well saved by Casha, and two minutes later John Paul Muscat made his way on the left and Marlon Briffa’s shot slightly missed the upright.

Eight minutes before the break Mqabba were unlucky when an Albert Busuttil freekick slammed against the crossbar.

Marsa went close on two occasions through Gilbert Martin and Jeremy Dalli, but on both occasions goalkeeper Calleja stood out. Marsa goalkeeper Casha effected a double save on 62 minutes first denying Anywanna and then blocking Briffa’s attempt from the rebound.

Four minutes later Marsa were awarded a penalty for a foul on Gilbert Martin, but Calleja saved the resultant penalty taken by Marsa goalkeeper Casha. The same Casha punched Psaila following the taking of the penalty and was rightly sent off, with player Kevin Scerri taking his place in goal, as Marsa had already effected all their three substitutions.

On 72 minutes Mqabba scored their third goal when Anastasi passed to Marlon Briffa who scored from close range. Four minutes later defender Marco Catania headed in an Edric Borg corner.
