Bank Of Valletta first division: Senglea obtain their second consecutive win

Malta Independent Monday, 6 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Senglea Athletic continued with their recovery beating St Andrew’s to obtain the second consecutive victory and move further up in the table.

The result is a fair one as Senglea created the better chances in front of goal, with Debono in the Saints’ goal, the best player on the field of play. However the wooden-spoonists gave a very good account of themselves, suffering the second goal against the run of play.

The Saints had a good chance after a couple of minutes with Galea heading wide. On the other end a Kenneth Abela shot was blocked by Debono. This was practically Abela’s last action as he limped off after 15 minutes. Jose Borg took his place forming a tandem with Gera.

On 28 minutes a Mark Marlow long pass, put Caruana through whose perfect pass found Gera unmarked, with his shot brilliantly saved by Debono. Two minutes later Attard missed a clearance in front of his penalty area, with Chetcuti crossing to Jerry Ani who, completely unmarked, headed high.

On 33 minutes a Darren Grech freekick was turned into a corner by Debono. However Senglea took a deserved lead three minutes later when Clint Caruana powered his way on the left and his cross found substitute Jason Borg completely unmarked, who headed home past Debono.

The second half started with Senglea going very close on two occasions with Jason Borg twice completely unmarked in front of goal, but in both cases goalkeeper Debono effected brilliant saves to thwart the Senglea striker.

On 65 minutes St Andrew’s obtained the equaliser when the Senglea defence failed to clear the ball following a corner from the left, with the ball going to Jerry Ani who made no mistake from an acute angle.

This was the Saints best patch as they surged forward to take the lead, but were dealt a severe blow on 74 minutes when Mark Marlow passed to the unmarked Jason Borg who scored his brace with a low shot.

St Andrew’s tried to level the score but Senglea were now in full control of midfield and were a constant menace with their breaks. With four minutes to go Senglea sealed the issue, when goalkeeper Jonathan Debono mistimed his sortie, and Glenn Bonello slammed home from close range.
