Volleyball: More Decisive matches

Malta Independent Wednesday, 8 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

With the leagues entering into a crucial stage, a number of matches start getting important to decide placings. Especially in the Men’s senior league, with matches deciding which teams will play in the First Division and those that will play in the Second Division, once teams are divided in two groups in a few weeks’ time.

While Kerygma Blues and Fleur de Lys FEB are nearly certain playing in the first division, the fight for the third spot is as open as ever between Aloysians Lipton and San Anton, with the former having a three point lead, but with the latter having a game in hand. Both were involved in tense matches this weekend, and both came out on top.

Aloysians Lipton’s clash with current champions Fleur de Lys B was a true show of grit and determination from Lipton’s side. The first set was very balanced, but Fleur de Lys B took the necessary points at the end to win it 25-22, then completely demolishing Lipton in the second set to take a 2-0 win.

Lipton played much better in the third one, won 25-16 and re-opened the game, managing to win also the fourth and taking the match to a fifth set. Aloysians kept playing well, went 8-4 up, however Fleur de Lys B equalised at 12-12.But Aloysians took the last three points and won 15-12 and the match 3-2.

San Anton, from their side, had to play against eternal rivals Kerygma Yellows. And it turned out to be a tense match as usual, especially at the end of the match. San Anton took an immediate 2-0 lead, playing much better than their opponents and leaving them just 13 and 19 points respectively.

However they relaxed in the third one, and Kerygma took the opportunity to take one back, although with difficulty, 27-25. The fourth set was quite balanced as well, as Kerygma kept playing well. However San Anton won this set 25-22 and the match 3-1. This weekend they have a very important match against Aloysians Lipton.

In another match Kerygma Blues beat Fleur de Lys B 3-0, with the latter gathering just 34 points in the entire match. Kerygma thus strengthened their first place, joint with Fleur de Lys FEB.

Another tense match was played in the Ladies’ Seniors League, between X-Sel and Flyers. The former needed the points to continue with their assault on league leaders and current champions Paola Hibs Candy, while Flyers want to get out from their place and keep fighting for third or possibly second place.

The first two sets went one a piece, with the same score of 25-23,however some good work from X-Sel in the third one saw them taking a 2-1 lead. Flyers played better in the fourth one, however some mistakes in the middle of the set cost them too much, losing 22-25 and the match 3-1.
