Malta Independent Friday, 24 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

There were more great team scores in of the current Middlesea Valletta Life National League being played at the Eden SuperBowl, the best of all being leaders Aercomms’ huge 2,652 series in their drubbing of Sammy’s Embroideries. Ramis claim second place having beaten Globalair Travel 0-8, and taking advantage of Interwetten Alley Catz’ 8-0 beating at the hands of Fina First.

The Catz drop to fifth while Fina First got third with that result. Fourth team Fina Excel were also 8-0 winners this week, struggling Swoosh being on the losing end of the score line. In other matches there were similar 6-2 wins for both New Blood and Royal Shock, over Right Deal and Fireballs respectively.

Aercomms were red hot from the opening frame against Sammy’s Embroideries (10th), setting the pace with a massive 692-872 win in game one. Their best game score came in game two which they took 738-905, featuring a great 257 from Rankin Camilleri, stretching their lead on the series to 340 pins as they headed into the last of the set. Aercomms never let up even though the match was easily in the bag, taking it 694-875 to complete their 2,652 tally. Kenneth Arpa (Aercomms), 711-Bowler of the Week. Leli Scerri (Sammy's Embroideries), 543.

Ramis improve to second place having easily seen off sixth placed Globalair Travel in another 0-8 match. Game one could have gone either way, but Ramis picked up in time to win it by 22 pins (734-756) to take the early advantage. They had an easier time of it in game two which they won easily with their best effort of the evening, 705-819, but it was close again in game three in which only nine pins separated the pair (726-735).

Leli Baldacchino (Ramis), 599. Simon Burke (Globalair Travel), 635.

Defending Champions Fina First improved to third place by winning their confrontation with Intwerwetten Alley Catz, eight points to nil. Both outfits started well with game one eventually swaying in Fina’s favour to end 827-796. They took the second with greater ease, 786-727 the score to double their lead, but both teams produced their best of the night in game three which ended 883-850, confirming the whitewash. Mauro Anastasi, Sue Abela (Bowler of the Week), both 662. Philippe Vancell (Interwetten Alley Catz), 645.

Fina Excel are the last in the ‘group of four’ at the top, who all claimed 100 per cent victories in week seven. Theirs was a case of easy pickings against bottom side Swoosh, who seem set for a rapid return to the second division at the end of the season.

The series progressed 820-740, 823-744, 847-777 with the youthful Swoosh side being outclassed in all aspects of the match. Brian Farrugia (Fina Excel), 676. Ryan Grech (Swoosh), 586.

The first of two 6-2 wins went to New Blood (8th) against Right Deal (7th). The two sides traded points in games one and two, with New Blood Taking the early lead with a 742-688 win in the opener, and Right Deal bouncing back to level it with a 681-742 equaliser in game two, leaving themselves with a narrow seven pin advantage meaning the match was anybody’s as game three rolled off.

New Blood were up to the pressure, and shot a 755 game, 99 better than their opponents’ 656 effort, thus taking the series points by 92 pins. Ray Mifsud (New Blood), 632. Colin Attard (Right Deal), 522.

Royal Shock (9th) were also 6-2 victors in their clash with Fireballs (11th).

They won games one and two with respective score lines of 735-648 and 736-688 to make it very difficult for Fireballs to salvage a draw, although they certainly tried with their 644-739 winner in game three, which left them 40 pins shy of the series points (2115-2075). Joe Cassar (Royal Shock), 600. Keith Bugeja (Fireballs), 542.

Perfect games galore!

The improving standards of our local tenpin bowlers becomes more and more evident in all sectors of the discipline, and recent weeks have seen no less than three ‘perfect’ 300 games. These were achieved firstly by young star Mauro Anastasi who managed a 300 during one of his regular training sessions. As if that wasn’t enough, he repeated his dream ‘twelve in a row’ spectacle just one week later, again during training.

The third perfect game came from senior bowler, and veteran of the local bowling scene Leli ‘Il-Kanajs’ Baldacchino, whose 300 came during the Eden SuperBowl Doubles League, which means his game goes down in the record books as an official perfect game, as it was played during an MTBA sanctioned league match.

The game formed part of an 8-0 win for Leli’s team Jewz, against Enemalta.
