Winners and runners-up of various tournaments organised by VLTC were presented with trophies during a social event held at the club recently. Presentations for the Samsung Rennie Tonna team tournament, Lotto team tournament, John West Mixed Doubles tournament and the Christmas Singles tournament were held.

Samsung Rennie Tonna team tournament

This competition is one of the most popular amongst club members and was sponsored by Samsung.

A total of 66 men and 42 ladies participated in this tournament. Teams played against each other twice on a round robin system. The top placed four teams proceeded to play the semi-finals with Anthony Sammut’s team beating Team F captained by Carmen Difesa while Team A captained by Rinaldo D' Alessandro beating Doreen Bezzina's team.

The final was won by Rinaldo D’Alessandro’s team after a tense and evenly contested encounter, which was only resolved thanks to a one game difference between the teams after finishing with an equal number of sets.

Christmas Singles tournament

This favoured competition drew a strong participation from club members. A total of 55 players entered the singles tournament which was organised on a knockout basis.

A seeding system was also introduced and applied for the top 10 male players and top five female players. The final of the main draw was played between Clayton Zammit and Noel Portelli, the former emerging a worthy winner with a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline after a hard fought match played on the Orienta Court.

In the ladies event, Alexia Carabott beat Charmaine Mifsud in the final played on The Model Shop court with a 7-5; 6-2..

A consolation event was also played for players losing their first encounter in the tournament. The consolation events were won by Antoine Chircop and Helga Azzopardi, while Simon Micallef and Christine Scerri were the runners-up.

Lotto Team tournament

The Lotto Team tournament was played on a 14-game, round robin basis. In the semi-finals the team captained by Dave Elden beat Doreen Bezzina's team while the team captained by Vince Vassallo eliminated that of Rinaldo D’Alessandro.

The final was played on the Orienta court in front of a sizeable crowd which assisted to some fine play. Despite stiff opposition from Vassallo's team, Elden's team won the tournament.

The event was sponsored by the Lotto sports firm through its representative in Malta, Gordon Asciak.

John West Mixed Doubles tournament

The John West Mixed Doubles event attracted 35 couples which were divided into five divisions.

The first division was won by Noel Portelli and Charmaine Mifsud while Andrew Spiteri /Alexia Carabott ended runners up.

In Division 2, mother and son, Doris and Clayton Zammit, partnered each other to emerge winners while Gerald and Roseanne Brincat were runners-up.

Division 3 was won by Pierre Darmanin and his daughter Chanelle while Manuel Casha and Lydia Borg were the runners-up of this division.

The winners of Divisions 4 and 5 were Joseph and Marie Claire Vella and Simon and Yvette Rutter respectively while the runners up were Anthony Coleiro / Marthese Camoin and Joe Grech/Grace Barbar respectively.

Crown Cold Stores Ltd., representatives in Malta of John West Foods, sponsored the tournament.
