Malta Independent Monday, 6 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

League leaders St George’s consolidated their leadership with an easy victory over bottom placed St Andrew’s. St George’s were in a class of their own and their win could have even bigger. They dominated from start to finish, with the second half practically a training spin for Marco Gerada’s boys. They have now increased their lead to four points over second placed Tarxien, and have a commanding seven-point lead over joint third placed Marsa and Mqabba.

On the end St Andrew’s were a demotivated lot yesterday. They were completely outclassed and never came to grips with their opponents. Their position at the bottom of the table is rather desperate and only a miracle can save them from a quick return to second Division football next season.

It was evident from the initial whistle that the league leaders were a superior lot. They surged forward keeping the St Andrew’s team on the defensive fro the first fourty five minutes.

Trevor Thomas headed centrally from close range, with Debono blocking his header. Debono was again called in action surging out of his position to block the inspired Keith Darmanin.

On 18 minutes Ewurun dribbled past two defenders and his grounder was again saved by Debono. Three minutes later St George’s took a deserved lead, but this time goalkeeper Debono was at fault when he failed to hold a Jesmond Delia freekick and Ewurun nipped in to score from two metres.

On 24 minutes St George’s were two up when Ewurun scored a beauty from the edge of the area. Near the end of the first half St Andrew’s had their first attempt at goal with a long distance drive by Niki Micallef, with Andrea Gatt effecting a spectacular save to keep his side with a two-goal cushion at half-time.

In the second half St George’s continued to dominate displaying some good football in the process. On the hour Ewurun missed his hat-trick when his shot was stopped by the upright. Four minutes later Thomas was tripped by Chetcuti and from the resultant penalty, the same Trevor Thomas made no mistake.
