HSBC Renews ‘Xummiemu’ sponsorship

Malta Independent Wednesday, 19 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

As some of the 3,000 young members of the Xummiemu Club enjoyed a morning of activities at the Wied Incita Nursery, HSBC Cares For The Environment Fund (HCEF) renewed its sponsorship of the Xummiemu Campaign for a second year.

Every scholastic term the Xummiemu Club, which is run by WasteServ, tackles a different environmental theme, with the current theme being trees and plants which are endemic to Malta.

During their visit to Wied Incita, the children were given a tour of the plant and tree nurseries by Environmental Landscaping Consortium (ELC) staff, enjoyed educational games, and the Xummiemu puppet show.

HCEF director, Dr Philip Farrugia Randon, who presented the renewed sponsorship to Magda Naudi from WasteServ Malta Limited, said: “The Xummiemu campaign has had a successful year and it’s great to see all these youngsters enjoying themselves while they learn about the trees and plants which are endemic to the Maltese Islands. Protecting the environment requires a change in attitude and behaviour which is why educating children is so important and why HCEF is so committed to helping the Xummiemu campaign.”

Through HSBC’s financial support, members of the Xummiemu Club have been provided with further education and information related to specific environmental issues through regular correspondence and outings organised on a regular basis.

The Xummiemu puppet show also visited schools and other activities organised by NGOs. HSBC’s support was also directed to the creation of merchandise to promote Xummiemu. In fact 25,000 Jute bags were distributed for shoppers to use as an alternative to plastic in order to promote waste minimisation.
