Members of the Philatelic Society, Malta, recently exhibited philatelic material on the “George Cross” and the “World Cup” at St Publius Oratory, in Floriana.

Exhibits with the George Cross theme submitted by Joe Cachia included illustrations, photographs, postcards together with blocks and multiples of stamps and captions, while Alfred Caruana Ruggier displayed The Epic of Malta with the George Cross on the cover, a replica of the George Cross and pages from magazines on the subject.

John Cardona exhibited plate blocks of past Malta George Cross issues. Anthony Fenech put on show “maximum” cards and postcards together with G.B. stamps and The Encyclopaedia of Stamps dealing with Malta and the George Cross.

Exhibits of World Cup philatelic material were presented by Josie Lanfranco with interesting covers, some autographed by World Cup legends, stamp sets of past editions of the Cup, World Cup medals and coin covers.

Joe Cachia exhibited album sheets with multiples of stamps and illustrations of issues by the Malta Post Office and Maltapost. Anthony Fenech displayed maximum cards and a stamp folder issued by the Italian Post Office in honour of Italy, which won the coveted Cup three times.

The next members’ meeting will be held at the same venue on Wednesday 3 May at 6pm.

During the meeting, president of the society, Dr A. Bonnici, will talk about “Ideas on how to participate and mount a collection for an International exhibition”, and vice-president, Mr A Fenech will discuss “Ideas and Considerations on Stamp Collecting”.

The public is invited to attend.
