Malta Independent Sunday, 30 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Lisa Falzon is an artist whose last show The Secret, a 41-piece exhibition of her latest creations, was up at St James Cavalier throughout this month. It remains open until 5 May. This was her fourth solo exhibition – she set up her first at the age of 16, and has taken part in numerous collectives since. The artist has a unique style and uses art as a form of visual poetry, as a medium with which to communicate her ideas that come forth sharply, clearly and may leave you wondering. The artist takes her art very seriously and is in the process of organising an exhibition in Tokyo. Visit: www.lisafalzon.com

n How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

I am 23 years old, I’m an Aquarius, born on

10 February.

n What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

I can’t think that far ahead – doing art is what I imagine I’ll be doing, yet I can’t say in which field of art I’ll be. Maybe I’ll also be a mother by then.

n What is your idea of perfect happiness?

To do whatever makes you feel fulfilled for the greatest chunk of time possible and spend as little time as possible doing things you dislike like going to the bank or cleaning out cat litter.

n What is your favourite occupation?

Aside from painting, sketching and reading about art, and I love computer games.

n What is your greatest fear?

I’m scared someday I’ll wake up and find I’m not inside my own body at all, I’m in someone else’s body, someone hateful. And the someone hateful would get to be inside my body and get to be Lisa and be smug about it and no one would believe it’s actually ME inside the hateful person because the other would enjoy being Lisa so much they wouldn’t admit it. And that would make me dispossessed of my own self and possibly institutionalised and extremely angry.

n How would you like to die?

I wouldn’t like to die at all. But if I must, then I don’t care how. I’d just like to be cremated and have a marching band at the funeral, please.

n What is your greatest extravagance?

I’m flamboyant, so I’m extravagant in general – I love to shop for accessories, clothes, shoes and books. And I keep finding excuses to buy new handbags.

n What is your greatest regret?

I don’t have any regrets because I like where I am now and where I’m going, and I am what I am because of all I’ve been through, that includes both my mistakes and my triumphs. I am a great believer in the butterfly effect. I honestly wouldn’t change a single thing in my past.

n What is your most treasured possession?

My most treasured possessions switch around every time I get a new favourite, it’s a complex sort of ranking system and I do sit down and think “what’s my favourite thing at the moment” but earlier today I decided that at the moment it’s my engagement ring.

n Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

I’d like to be an acrobat of some sort, a trapeze artist in particular. I think I’d like to own a circus in the future, but with no elephants or horses, just a lot of acrobats and knife-throwers.

n What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

To lose one’s faith in one’s own self.

n Where would you like to live?

In a castle somewhere by a forest. Or else maybe in a clinic-like minimalist apartment in New York.

n What is your most marked characteristic?

Physically, it’s my black hair. Emotionally, it’s my black temper.

n Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

I really admire Jean Parisot de la Vallette. His face should go on the Euro.

n What is it that you most dislike?

People who talk about stuff they have no clue about in a manner and with the same authority as if they were experts in it.

n What is your motto?

“Faint heart never won fair lady”. It’s a prettier motto than “who dares wins” which means the same thing but sounds a little... military. But I believe in the message wholeheartedly, it’s the truest motto in the world and one of the best pieces of advice ever.
