Malta Independent Friday, 12 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A man was jailed for two years suspended for four after he pleaded guilty to several charges, including that of attempting to injure two police constables and a police sergeant in January.

Richard Southernwood, 43, from Pembroke, was handed down with the suspended sentence and fined Lm150 after the court heard that he had tried to hit the policemen who were trying to stop him during a high speed car chase between Marsa and Sliema on 24 January at 10pm.

He also pleaded guilty to disobeying police orders and to breaching several traffic regulations such as running red lights, driving against one-way signs and endangering the lives of the pedestrians who were walking or crossing the road at the time.

He also pleaded guilty to driving recklessly and dangerously.

Apart from the suspended sentence and the fine, Southernwood was also disqualified from driving for a year.

Police inspector Malcolm Spiteri prosecuted.
