A fire broke out in an abandoned quarry close to the Marsa Industrial Estate yesterday.

Speaking to The Malta Independent, Civil Protection Director Peter Cordina said some rubbish caught fire but was brought under control by fire-fighters soon afterwards.

The fire resulted in a huge amount of black smoke that engulfed Marsa and nearby areas and was seen from various parts of Malta.

No one was injured.
