Malta Independent Sunday, 13 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Rotaract is back after several years’ absence. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club with young men and women (ages 18 to 30) who serve the needs of their community, widen their personal and professional contacts, and increase their understanding of the world through international service.

Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon with an estimated membership of more than 176,000 Rotaractors in more than 7,600 Rotaract clubs in 158 countries.

The club holds formal meetings once a fortnight. Rotaractors utilise their free time for service project work, social events, and professional and leadership development workshops.

Rotaract Malta La Valette was officially founded on 28 June 2006. It has 20 members with Ian-Edward Stafrace as president, Chiara Ellul as vice president, five directors, a secretary and a treasurer. It is sponsored by the two local Rotary clubs – Rotary Club La Valette Malta and Rotary Club Malta, and is part of the Sicily-Malta District 2110.

The club’s president and vice-president, went to Sicily for this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards RYLA. RYLA is Rotary’s training programme for young leaders with emphasis on leadership and personal growth. Other Rotaract members had the opportunity to go to Sicily to meet fellow Rotaract members and discuss current topics.

Various activities were organised this year including a tree planting activity at the Foresta 2000 forestation project in Mellieha, a treasure hunt, and a team-building afternoon.

The club participated in an international project piloted by the Croatian Rotaract Club Osijek. The Maltese language will be showcased in a CD that includes a famous piece of literature from every European country.

The club also organised Rotaract Dives for Amy with PADI certified diving courses. Lm 5 from each participant is contributed towards Amy Zahra’s fund.
