Labour Proposes revision of local wardens system

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Labour Party is proposing a full-scale revision of the local wardens system without the need to introduce a new tax.

Announcing a party discussion document, Labour leader Alfred Sant said wardens have become like tax collectors, threatened with possible sacking if they do not issue enough fines.

Most of the earnings of the system are going to a restricted circle of the few commercial companies in the sector, Dr Sant said. The party believes that local councils ought to get more of the revenues than they are receiving.

Where citizens can prove they had been charged with an infraction that did not take place, Labour proposes that the Justice Commissioners can issue compensation.

The party also suggests more enforcement by green wardens.

In a reaction, the PN local councils committee claimed that the Labour vision is far less radical than the one the PN has with regard to local councils.
