A jury of 13 leading automotive journalists from the growing markets of Central and Eastern Europe has voted the Opel Corsa “Autobest 2007”. The new model came first ahead of Fiat Grande Punto and Peugeot 207.

“It was a very tough competition with strong opposition. The new Corsa came out on top thanks to its overall value for money, and proved strong in many of the criteria adopted by the jury,” said Autobest Chairman, Dan Vardie. “The new Corsa represents a revolution compared with the previous generation. There is a completely new philosophy behind the car and this has paid off.”

The jury took 13 criteria into consideration when selecting the Autobest car winner. Each category was worth a specific number of points depending on its importance. With 60 out of a total of 240 points, value for money was a very important criterion. Other key regional issues, such as distribution network, service and spare parts availability, fuel consumption, versatility and cargo capacity were worth 20 points each. Altogether, these criteria accounted for more than one half of the total number of points.

Other issues common to all European countries, such as new technology, handling, dynamics and environmental compatibility were also weighted. Worth a maximum of 30 points, design is becoming increasingly important to customers in this region.

The international Autobest jury represents almost all the important growing markets in Europe. The organisation is the only international independent jury that focuses on best-buy choice for mainstream customers. This year’s Autobest jury included members from thirteen countries in the region, covering a virtual market of more than 250 million people. Each jury member is an outstanding automotive journalist and a respected voice in his country. The sixth Autobest awards ceremony will take place in early February 2007 in Poland.
