Snooker - Malta Cup: Shaun Murphy To meet Ryan Day in today's final

Today’s final will be contested by Shaun Murphy and Ryan Day. Both players won their semi-finals yesterday with the identical scoreline of 6-3 to claim a berth in the final.

Murphy is just one win away from his first title since becoming world champion as he dispatched Ali Carter yesterday.

For Welshman Day, this will be his first ever ranking tournament final after defeating Peter Ebdon 6-3.

The Rotherham cueman's break-building skills were in full display at the Portomaso Hilton Conference Centre as he made two centuries and four more breaks over 50 to beat Carter 6-3.

Murphy's 2005 Crucible triumph remains his sole ranking title and today he will play in his third final - the other was at last season's Welsh Open when he lost 9-4 to Stephen Lee.

He will face Peter Ebdon or Ryan Day over 17 frames with the trophy and a £30,000 top prize up for grabs.

"When I lost in the final of the Welsh last year, I wasn't as fit mentally as I am now," said the 24-year-old world No 5. "I wasn't on my A game and I couldn't stop him (Lee) playing.

"I have more in reserve now when my potting fails. I don't mind who I play tomorrow, although it was Peter Ebdon who deposed me as world champion so it would be nice to get him back for that."

Murphy was off to a flying start with breaks of 111, 80 and 59 to take the first three frames.

Tiptree's Carter, playing in only his second career semi-final, pulled one back with 45 and 48 then Murphy went 4-1 up with a 115.

The Essex player battled gamely with 69 and 61 to get back to 4-3. But Murphy's heavy scoring did not let him down as two trademark long reds set him up for runs of 76 and 80 to take the last two frames without conceding a point.

"It's very pleasing to see my hard work in practice paying off," added Murphy. "I scored well and put Ali in a lot of trouble.

"I turned shots down that six months ago I would have gone for. I thought to myself that I'm in the lead and I don't need to throw my cue at anything. Often my next shot would be an easy red so it worked."

World No 15 Carter said: "I'm pleased to have got to the semi-finals but I'm disappointed by the way I played today. I scrapped a couple of frames but Shaun is cueing very sweetly and hardly missed a ball. I can't see anyone stopping him being the champion."

The second semi-final saw Ebdon taking the first frame, but Day claimed the next four in a row to race into a strong 4-1 lead. Ebdon then claimed the next two frames to get back in contention, but Day replied by winning the eighth and ninth frames to clinch his berth in today’s final.
