Football – Bank Of Valletta first division: Mosta humiliate leaders Mqabba

Malta Independent Monday, 5 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Lowly Mosta broke a seven match winless streak by beating none others than leaders Mqabba. As the score indicates Mosta were completely superior especially in the second half, when Molzahn's boys scored the all important goals.

This morale boosting win gives Mosta fresh hopes in their quest to avoid the big drop after their relegation from the Premier League. The league leaders failed miserably yesterday and they can lose the leadership if Tarxien beat Hamrun later on this month. The sad and sorrow loss of Chibueze left its mark on the leaders. New signing Ribic did not impress that much, but to be fair he cannot be judged on only 90 minutes. Other key players like John Paul Muscat, Marlon Briffa and Albert Busuttil all had a well below par performance and that, in part, explains the leaders' downfall.

On the other hand Mosta's determination proved to be the winning trump. The January signings gave Mosta the desired effect, with Theuma filling the gaps at the back and Ewurun giving the attack a completely different and lethal image. The other new player, Sciberras, immediately left his mark scoring his side's opener.

The first half was very balanced and keenly contested. Lowly Mosta, further strengthened by another new signing, Charles Sciberras, played a very diligent first half and gave the league leaders a good run for their money.

Anthony Ewurun was very effective for Molzahn's side and was a constant menace to the Mqabba rearguard. Mqabba were without Jesmond Delia, and fielded new signing Alex Ribic, romped in to fill the gap left by Chibueze who passed away last week.

Mosta did the early running with Ives Bilocca shooting over the bar. Mqabba hit back with Anastasi's shot going wide. On 23 minutes Mosta went very close to scoring when a Lydon Cilia freekick was headed by Ewurun, with the ball slightly missing the base of the upright. A minute later Bilocca passed to Brian Galea who shot well over the bar when well placed.

On 35 minutes Ewurun had a good run on the left but Bilocca failed to connect in front of goal. Four minutes later a Ribic fierce freekick was blocked by Joshua Galea. Just before the break Mqabba created their best scoring chance when a Southward header was cleared off the line by defender Mario Abela.

The second half started with Ewurun missing an easy chance in front of goal. On 55 minutes Mqabba were rather unlucky when a Clyde Camoin cross shot deceived the Mosta goalkeeper but the ball finished against the upright.

Three minutes later Mosta took the lead when Charles Sciberras beat Kris Calleja from the edge of the area. Mqabba's much expected reaction failed to arrive as Mosta controlled their opponents in midfield. Ten minutes from time Matthew Cocks tried his luck from the edge of the area with Joshua Galea effecting the best save of the match.

Two minutes later Mosta sealed the issue when Mqabba defender Marco Catania headed in his own net in an attempt to anticipate Ewurun following a Theuma freekick.

Mqabba were now completely at Mosta's mercy and five minutes from time the ex-St. George's striker Anthony Ewurun crowned his five star performance by scoring the third goal after another fine run.

In stoppage time Ewurun was irresistible again beating the whole Mqabba defence but he shot incredibly wide with an open goal at his mercy.

Vittoriosa move to safer waters

Vittoriosa 3

San Gwann 0

Vittoriosa returned to winning ways after two consecutive defeats, beating bottom placed San Gwann to grab three precious points and move to safer waters.

Without any shadow of doubt, the side led by Massimo Cremona was by far superior and were worthy winners. Scerri, Guazzo and Gatt played their hearts in midfield, with Anywanna and Trevor Thomas in devastating form in attack.

On the other hand Danilo Doncic's side are now in deep relegation trouble and need to work hard to move away from the bottom of the table. Although displaying some good football, the side lacks experience and were outclassed by a more determined and aggressive Vittoriosa side.

Both teams were in dire need of points, both smarting from slender defeats in their last outing. San Gwann still anchored to the bottom of the table, paraded new signings Mauro Brincat and Nebiosa Stajic.

Vittoriosa started the match on a high note even taking the lead through a Sciberras header, but the goal was disallowed by referee Arciola for no apparent reason.

Vittoriosa continued to dominate the first part with Anywanna failing to connect in front of goal. Slowly but surely, San Gwann got more into the game, displaying some neat and interesting moves.

On 22 minutes Mauro Brincat blasted high from an ideal position following a well orchestrated move between Vella Critien and Cuschieri.

On 36 minutes Vittoriosa forged ahead, when from a well taken freekick by Adami, Cedric Sciberrras nipped in and headed past Spiteri. The Stars went close again minutes later with Anywanna passing to Trevor Thomas who tested Spiteri with a hard drive from just inside the area.

San Gwann registered a late rally, and were unlucky in the dying seconds of the first half, when from a Mauro Brincat freekick, Aaron Guazzo almost committed an own goal when his clearance slammed against the crossbar.

Vittoriosa started the second half like a house on fire scoring two goals in the opening ten minutes to practically kill all San Gwann's hopes of saving the match. An Anywanna shot hit the side netting, with Trevor Thomas missing a good opportunity from ten metres. However Vittoriosa scored their second goal on 51 minutes when Anywanna slotted home from close range an inviting cross by Guazzo from the right.

Three minutes later the Stars were on velvet when Trevor Thomas shot home from the edge of the area following a chaotic action inside the San Gwann box.

Vittoriosa were now in full command of the game, with San Gwann trying desperately to score at least a consolation goal. They went close through a Roberto Brincat dipper that was well saved by Cassar, and through some efforts by Stajic.

However Vittoriosa went close to scoring further goals in their fast breaks, with Justin Spiteri in the San Gwann goal doing his utmost to deny the Stars from scoring further goals.
