60 Second Interview - Maria Buckle

Malta Independent Sunday, 11 February 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Maria Buckle has always loved anything to do with theatre. She trained at Masquerade Theatre of Arts School for three years and also spent a year at the Drama Unit. She was one of the final six in TV’s L-Isfida, which she says gave her a whole new outlook to theatre. She says that it was then that she realised that “in order to get noticed you must shine and prove yourself. Once you do that you get the confidence you need and the will to face the challenge!”

Maria took part in The Good Doctor and in two MADC pantomimes, namely Snowhite and the Seven Dwarves, in which she was Chorus and in Sleeping Beauty she played that naughty little green gremlin, Clobba.

Because she loves being on the stage Maria also sat for some exams with Guildhall. She feels that on stage you can do and be whatever you want, “because on stage it’s not you but the character you are playing”. Even though she’s been interested in theatre for quite some time, she has the humility to realise that she still has “a loooooonnggg way to go!” but is willing to work hard in order to get there.

Maria will be taking part in Unifaun Theatre’s next production Paul, an irreverent and provocative new play by Howard Brenton which will be directed by Chris Gatt.

How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

22 years; Capricorn; 4 January 1985.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

Would like to be married with children though not a lot of them. I would also like to be practising law and at the same time to be a good actress. Practising law and being a good actress are not incompatible. Hopefully in 10 years’ time I shall have a bit more cash than I have right now, because what I have right now just isn’t gonna cut it!

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Loving and being loved back and appreciated. Also,

having full confidence in yourself.

What is your favourite occupation?

Working as co-director with Steven Spielberg! No, no seriously. I’d love to be a family lawyer.

What is your greatest fear?

OK, I know it’s strange, but my greatest fear is eternity.

What is it that you most value in your friends?

Honesty, trust and support.

How would you like to die?

Well, I guess the swiftest way is to go in your sleep, you don’t go through any hassles, and you don’t worry the people around you... well, maybe the person who finds you will have a bit of a hard time afterwards, but, sorry, I would still go for that option.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Visiting foreign countries as often as possible.

What is your greatest regret?

Not standing up to some people earlier in my life.

What is your most treasured possession?

My diamond ring. It’s the only one I’ve ever had!

Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

The talent to sing.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of

misery?

Being alone with no purpose in life.

Where would you like to live?

Malta is fine.

What is your most marked characteristic?

People say I’m funny and I make them laugh.

Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

My brothers and my boyfriend.

What is it that you most dislike?

Cockroaches, backstabbing and people who think they’re better than everyone else (I mean really!)

What is your motto?

When you feel as if you just can’t succeed, remember, you were once the fastest sperm out of millions!
