A new sports complex was inaugurated in Kercem on Sunday evening by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and Family and Social Solidarity Minister Dolores Cristina.
The sports complex has been named after Raymond Mercieca, a Kercem resident who died at the young age of 39 years.
Minister Cristina said the project was carried out by the Kercem local council in conjunction with the Gozo Ministry. Moreover, the Family and Social Solidarity Ministry spent Lm17,000 to upgrade a playing field close to the sports complex, which has a football ground, a five-a-side football pitch, headquarters for the Kercem Ajax football club, a tennis court and two bocci pitches.
On her part, Minister Debono spoke about the importance of such joint ventures between the government and local councils in the best interests of localities and residents. She said that the Kercem council had taken various initiatives to improve the locality and the service for residents. Among these projects, she mentioned the construction of a civic centre, a twinning agreement with Orvieto in Italy, the setting up of a new website, an expansion of the library and various other embellishment projects.
